It is important to us that our patients are informed during every step of their treatment so that they are well prepared and have the chance to ask questions. The following information is a starting point for researching your procedure and should assist in developing a list of questions to ask during your consultation.
After Dental Implant Surgery
After dental implant surgery, it is recommended that you have a light schedule and diet for 24 hours. Resting assists the healing process and limits after surgery bleeding. Drink plenty of fluids, but nothing too cold. You may need to apply an ice pack to your face for twenty-minute intervals for 2 days following surgery if you have swelling. It is common to experience slight bleeding for about two days after surgery. While you can eat when you are hungry, do not chew directly onto the implant area.
After Impacted Tooth
Tooth becomes impacted when there is not enough room to accommodate the tooth in the dental arch and it becomes impossible for it to move into the correct position. After surgery to remove an impacted tooth, some discomfort and swelling is expected. We will give you instructions to follow for your post operative care. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication and antibiotics which should be taken as directed. Patients are advised to avoid the extraction area while eating and to modify their diet for a few days to allow for healing.
Tooth Extractions
The removal of one or two teeth is a relatively simple procedure. Extracting multiple teeth may require that the jawbone be shaped to make the bone smooth and also to prepare for a denture if necessary. After the extraction, a gauze pad will be placed over the extraction site and directions will be given to you on how to take care of the area. In the few days after the surgery you may experience swelling in the area and sore muscles from opening your mouth. Refrain from drinking from a straw or rinsing your mouth for 24 hours to ensure that you do not dislodge the blood clot that has formed. You may want to limit your activities for the day and take the medication as prescribed by your dentist.
